The Government recently granted exploration licences for “fracking” over 1453 sq. km in the Northwest Carboniferous Basin ('Lough Allen Basin') and 495 sq. km in the Clare Basin, (which includes parts of Kerry and Cork). “Hydraulic fracturing” is a gas well stimulation technique that has greatly increased the ability to extract natural gas from very tight rock. It is combined with horizontal drilling to extract natural gas trapped deep beneath the surface by injecting large volumes of water mixed with toxic chemicals which are then recovered and stripped of the gas. There are many environmental issues and Ireland’s current regulatory framework does not include fracking. Visit our new FRACKING PAGE and This email address is being protected from spambots.
